What does the Workshop include?
Theoretical part:
In the theoretical part of the program, experienced designers & tanners will present everything you need to know about leather qualities, various dyes, surface treatment methods and finishes such as polishing, waterproofing, chocolate dyes, etc. We will also present ways to protect, repair and care for leather goods.
Speakers:
- Despina Malli, founding member of Askardamykti, leather goods designer and head of training for the Leather Bags & Accessories department
- Dimitris Pantsios, Tannery Technician specializing in dyes & finishes from Chemicron, official Stahl Representative
In detail, the Theoretical Part Includes:
- Introduction to leather and leatherworking materials by Despina Mallis & George Mallis:
Types of leather used in leatherworking, their origin and their factory processing. Analysis of qualitative and macroscopic characteristics so that we can identify them and choose the appropriate leather depending on the construction. Introduction to other leatherworking materials such as the various types of leather dyes, dyes for soles, glues and solvents, polishes, threads, etc.
- Presentation/demonstration of Finishing Techniques by Dimitris Pantsios from Chemicron, official Stahl Representative: Impregnation paints and plastic paints, chocolate paints and other materials such as polishing creams, waterproofers, etc. Application demonstration
- Presentation/demonstration of Leather Goods Maintenance & Repair Techniques by Dimitris Pantsios
Laboratory part:
Leather surface treatment:
One of the most important creative tools in the hands of a designer is the autonomy to give his own design identity directly to the material he uses to make an accessory. Thus, the simplest technically and design-wise object is transformed into a work of art with a material that bears the uniqueness of its creator. In this chapter, we will explore leather dyes and patinas, creating various textures with leather surface processing techniques (engraving, stamping, printing, pleats, ruffles, embossing, etc.) as well as combination techniques. The goal is for each participant to create a small sample book with different handmade textures.
Small leather construction with hand tools :
In this part we will learn to handle leather (marking, cutting, finishing) and use hand tools to make small leather constructions (e.g. card holder, glasses case, agenda, etc.) with a ready-made pattern.
